Ian Woosnam,
OBE
We are delighted be affiliated with the “Peoples’
Champion” Ian Woosnam OBE: major-winner, former World Ranked No1, Ryder
Cup-winning captain and leading ambassador for British golf.
Since winning the Swiss Open in 1982, Woosnam became the
most prolific player in the history of the British game, winning more
professional golf tournaments than any other. The holder of 47 tournament wins
from across the globe, including the US Masters in 1991, “Woosie” is one of the
true greats of the sport.
A member of the legendary “Big 5” that included
Ballesteros, Faldo, Langer and Lyle, Woosnam was an ever present in the winner’s
enclosure throughout the 80s and 90s. He finished in the top ten on the Order of
Merit thirteen times in all, along with becoming the first player in the world
to win £1 million in prize money in a single year, winning eight tournaments.
Woosnam was a member of eight consecutive European Ryder Cup teams
from 1983 to 1997. He was a vice captain for the 2002 European team and was
elected as captain for the 2006 Ryder Cup, leading Europe to victory over the
U.S. 18½–9½.
“When I began our search for a player I wanted to get
somebody iconic who had the respect of the golfing public around the world. As
soon as I heard Ian was available I knew he was exactly what we were looking
for.” Simon Millington, CEO, The Sports HQ.
