John and Alan prove that even amateur golf players can
break records!
Its not just the professional golfers that can break records in the
golfing world, John Kretzschmar and Alan Hansen Begg have proved this
when they broke the world record for disc golf. Being just an amateur
golfer, John has a day job working as a Computer Programmer, so it was
quite an achievement for him to be able to juggle his career whilst
also excel at a sport he loves - swinging his golf clubs.
Not many amateur golf players at the age of only 28 will be able to
say they broke a world record, but John and Alan did just that on
Sunday 27th June 2004. John Kretzschmar of St. Paul, Minnesota, and
Alan Hansen Begg of Watertown, Minnesota, worked their golf clubs
furiously completing 327 holes of disc golf in a single day to break
the previous world record of 306 set in 2003 by two men from
Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Kretzschmar began to suffer leg cramps at around 10:00 a.m. and was
forced to stop playing at about 8:30 p.m. when the pain became too
intense to continue. Alan Hansen Begg, the other member of
Kretzchmar’s twosome, went on to complete 380 holes to guarantee
them as the new world record holders. Few golfers are as passionate
about disc golf as Alan Hansen Begg and Alan and John have taken their
golf clubs around 31 courses from Shakopee to Sartell throughout their
amateur golf careers so far.
John and Alan’s goal was to break the record of 306, set last
year in the Twin Cities by Steven Dodge and David Wold of
Fredericksburg, Va. Their journey started at 4:48 a.m. at the 18-hole
Lions Park course in Shakopee and concluded at 9:36 p.m. at the 12-hole
Mississippi River course in Sartell. Accompanying Hansen Begg and
Kretzschmar were their wives, who served as driver and navigator,
chiropractor Kevin Berg, acupuncturist Aaron Van Brunt, several others,
and of course, their golf clubs!
It is well documented that Minnesotans are extremely dedicated golf
players and golf experts rank the state as having the second highest
amount of golfers living in it, not to mention the amount of golf clubs
that must reside there! This can also be said for disc golf which is
becoming an extremely popular sport in Minnesota, so naturally the
Minnesotans were thrilled to see local Americans from their state gain
this prestigious world record in golf.
