Golf Clothing and the Unspoken Uniform

Golf Clothing and the Unspoken Uniform

Not all golf clubs have a dress code but there is an unspoken uniform when it comes to golf clothing.

When it comes to golf clothing there are items that are considered to be part of the game's uniform. There is a reason for this – it isn't some throw back to stuffy golf etiquette – golf clothing is grounded in practicality.

It isn't essential to wear a patterned sweater to play golf although some golf clubs do have a dress code the game is becoming more modern. You should check with your golf club on their rules on golf clothing before you play.

Essential golf clothing includes:

  • Waterproof clothes.

A good set of waterproofs is essential in any golfer's wardrobe. You can buy specific golf clothing from specialised retailers such as Sports HQ. Golf clothing should be light and flexible enough so that the golfer can feel free to do a full swing.

  • Hat

Baseball caps are common in golf clothing in the modern game as they are great for advertising brands or sponsors. But hats have always been an essential part of golf clothing – they can help you focus by blocking out the rest of the course. Headgear of course is also an essential part of any golf clothing outfit if it is winter – everybody knows that the head is where we loose the majority of the body's heat and if you are on the course for seven hours you need to be prepared.

  • Gloves

The glove is an essential part of any golf clothing range. And like Michael Jackson, you only need to wear one. Golfers wear their glove on their top hand – left or right depending on which hand you hold you golf clubs in. Most golf clothing ranges will feature leather gloves to ensure a snug fit and a firm grip.

  • Shoes

When buying golf clothing you shouldn't forget to buy a good pair of golf shoes. Once again, this isn't about fashion but practicality. It's possible to swing your golf clubs at 90mph and you don't want to loose your footing when you're making a big drive. Remember you could also be walking five miles for a game of golf, so comfort is important too.

There are two types of golf shoes you can buy from golf clothing ranges:

  1. Spiked soles – these mean you will have a firm grip even on soggy golf courses.
  2. Rubber-dimpled soles – these are a good alternative to spikes, as some clubs and courses are now banning spiked shoes to safeguard their greens.
