Golf Clothing – What Not to Wear
Golf Clothing – What Not to Wear
There are unwritten rules about golf clothing, although
that doesn't stop even the professionals breaking them.
Conservative golf clothing
According to the PGA Tour regulations, golf clothing should be
conservative: “Players shall present a neat appearance in both
clothing and personal grooming. Clothing worn by players shall be
consistent with currently accepted golf fashion. The Tournament
Director shall interpret this regulation, subject to the approval of
the Commissioner.”
Misjudged golf clothing
Perhaps the reason why golf clothing is so conservative in style
isn't just because it's functional. Golf has spent a long time being
held up to ridicule for misjudged golf clothing such as day-glo pants
and loud-patterned sweaters. The generic golf shirts and trousers have
become the adopted uniform when players pick out their golf clothing.
But bad style is always more entertaining than conservative style.
Some golfing professionals who have raised questions about their
choice of golf clothing include:
- Jesper Parnevik
- Charles Howell
- Aaron Baddeley
- Kenny Perry
- Duffy Waldorf
- Rich Beem
The Masters
For most golf clothing comes to the fore at the Masters. It is the
equivalent of the Parisian catwalk for many professionals and some
fashions have come and gone, and others have stuck around like a bad
smell.
There are a few key areas good golf clothing should fit:
- Good tailoring – baggy shirts aren't good, close fitting
shirts with belts will show off the figure, especially if it's
super-athlete Tiger Woods.
- Mix and match – ensembles of golf clothing should be
stylish, you don't want bright red or orange trousers and shirts so you
can be photographed from space. Colour works well if teamed up with
subdued pants or toned down with a grey tank top.
- Trends – It's best to avoid trends, in 1993 Phil Mickelson
wore a tie-dye shirt. Oops. Stay classy with your golf clothing.
Women's golf clothing
It isn't just the men making fashion splashes with their golf
clothing – in fact the women are bringing some much needed
glamour in some cases – but they still make fashion faux pas.
Becky Iverson fell out with the PGA when she insisted on wearing extra
large t-shirts. Annika Sorenstam even donned an evening gown (for a
publicity shot) but highlighted the importance of proper golf clothing
when she needed help teeing up the ball.
