Golf Clothing – Famous Style
Golf Clothing – Famous Style
How Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods revolutionized golf
clothing.
Crimes against golf clothing
Nick Faldo has been nicked by the fashion police for his crimes
against golf clothing more times than he’s been married. Some put
down his golf clothing mistakes down to the fact he has remarried
younger wives. Why else would he sport a bit of street style by wearing
a baseball cap on the golf course?
Flares or Flair?
But many credit Faldo for turning around golf clothing fashion when
he first came to the sport in the seventies. Nick Faldo’s choice
of golf clothing has been embraced by the weekend golfers and is
reflected on golf courses throughout the nation. There are no inverted
pleats or flares; this six major championship winner has flair of a
different kind than that in his trousers.
Golf’s 007
The Guardian newspaper has praised Faldo’s choice of golf
clothing from the seventies on: “Almost single-handedly he
obliterated the 70s silhouette, opting for a kind of updated 007 look
that rendered the wearer as comfortable emerging from the bucket seat
of a Porsche or perched on a stool at a fashionable bar as shaping to
wallop a ball down the 18th fairway,” the paper wrote.
Conservative golf clothing
And Tiger Woods is the next generation of golfer to re-define,
albeit conservatively, golf clothing. Once more the Guardian praised
his ability to add a splash of colour to the course: “By the time
Woods arrived on the scene in the mid-90s, golf had caught up so
wholeheartedly with the outside world's enthusiasm for black-on-black
that your average tournament foursome had started to resemble a group
of mourners at a mafia funeral,” the paper wrote. “Tiger's
fondness for offsetting his generously cut black slacks with unfussy
shirts colour-coded to the day of play (always red, his "power colour",
for Sunday's final round) restored a splash of contrast.”
Colour clash
But the relationship between Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods has a
competitive edge and it isn’t just their golf clothing that can
clash on the course. When the two played recently, Faldo was wearing a
red shirt and Woods an orange – anybody knows orange and red do
not match. Some believe the two players still haven’t gotten over
a personal feud after Faldo said a few critical comments on American
television. And although Tiger is happy to joke off course, when
he’s playing he doesn’t do small talk. Woods is unlikely to
ever be seen in golf clothing that was flippant; he dresses like he
plays – all business.
