Golf Clothing – Can it Ever be Sexy?
Golf Clothing – Can it ever be sexy?
Golf clothing has never had a sexy image, but is all that
about the change?
Can golf clothing be sexy?
Golf clothing has always been associated with slacks, jumpers with
triangular prints and polo necks. Unlike most other sports, it
hasn’t had any pin-ups or hot athletes sporting the latest
designer clobber. Britain’s most famous footballer David Beckham
is perhaps as well known for his fashion sense than his game. But can
golf clothing ever get the same glitz and glamour? Beckham famously
painted his nails black and wore a sarong – would Tiger Woods or
Nick Faldo ever put their golf clothing out there on the cutting edge
of fashion?
Sensible slacks
Maybe the boys are boring, sticking to their sensible slacks, but
one woman in golf is trying to single-handedly haul the sport and golf
clothing into the 21st Century. Golfer Sophie Sandolo launched a
calendar this year that is more than a little racy. Some are saying it
is a cynical ploy by the golfer to promote herself through the time
honoured means of posing in very few items of clothing, let alone
clothes suitable for golf.
Golf clothing – crime against fashion
Sandolo is naturally an Italian who sees golf clothing as a crime
against her fashion sensibilities and refuses to dress in the standard
polyester gear. Although she may be self promoting herself, she does
have a point. Golf clothing and fashion have never got along so well.
And perhaps it’s this fuddy-duddy image of dad slacks that have
put so many younger generations off playing the game.
Time for glamour
Golf hell raiser John Daly, who has struggled with addictions and a
yo-yo weight problem, once claimed he had the most famous breasts in
golf. Daly’s comment says a lot about the impact golf clothing
has had on the sexy world of fashion and celebrity. Perhaps it’s
time the game got some glamour and a new image.
Fuddy-duddy
But it doesn’t look like golf clothing is going to get a
make-over quite yet. The game is hundreds of years old and dragging its
image to a more up-to-date era is going to meet with some heavy
resistance.
A female golfer in Britain caused a stir when she stripped all her golf
clothing off and posed for glamour shots in a tabloid newspaper and was
banned from Wentworth Golf Club.
“"I was told my background was much too raunchy for the
fuddy-duddies who run Wentworth,” Hoad told the tabloid
newspaper, The Sun.
Perhaps, when it comes to golf clothing, slacks and tartan-print
jumpers will never go out of fashion – after all, they were never
in fashion to start with.
