Hanson Scores Home Victory at SAS Open

Golf News - Hanson Scores Home Victory at SAS Open

Despite appalling conditions in Sweden at the SAS Open, Peter Hanson defied the weather to secure his home country’s first win in the masters in 10 years. Hanson’s only victory on the European Tour to date was in 2005, the Swede managed to hang on in tough conditions for a nervous finish to lift the trophy and collect prize-winnings in the region of £208,000.

Runner-up Nick Dougherty who finished in the same position for a second year running caused the biggest drama of the SAS Open. The Englishman managed to hurt his back overnight; whilst attempting to warm-up the following morning, the Englishman managed to exaggerate the condition. Fortunately, Dougherty’s physician was not present at the event – the condition was most likely to have stopped the player from continuing and earning £104,000 in prize-winnings – leaving Dougherty in 14th position with two events left to be played.

Peter Hanson’s win at the SAS Open increased his position from 24th to 17th on the table and confirmed his participation at this week’s KLM Open, without a rest in an attempt to gain a place in the Ryder Cup team.

Germany’s Martin Kaymer finished in joint 14th after finishing on 69 – leaving the German in close pursuit on the 10th placed Soren Hansen in the cup standings. Hansen and Oliver Wilson both decided to rest for the current week.

Chris Wood (United Kingdom), tied in 18th position on his professional debut. Wood who finished in fifth position at The Open Championship in July, tied for the lead in his second round. Unfortunately, a nasty bout of food poisoning overnight affected his form throughout the remaining days of the match. Wood has been invited to play again this week in Holland and at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. Wood will also compete at the British Masters to be staged at The Belfry in an attempt to earn enough prize-winnings to prevent a visit to qualifying school at the close of the season. The British Masters will be staged at The Belfry from 25th to 28th September, 2008.
