Golf News | Faldo gives Ryder Cup Backing to Monty

The European Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo has spoken out in support of Colin Montgomerie prospects in this September's contest against the USA . Scottish born Montgomerie is an eight-time European number one finishes is currently only 54th in the Ryder Cup world points list and 34th in the European points table. Montgomerie dropped to 90th place in the world rankings meaning that he will have a large challenge in front of him in order to earn one of he ten positions within the team enabling him to defend the trophy.

Faldo has said that he believes that a player of Montgomerie’s calibre has ample time to pull it back. He goes as far as to comment that it is the six weeks ahead of The Open at Royal Birkdale in July that would be pivotal in ensuring Montgomerie’s place.

The PGA Championship is a fiercely fought event attracting a strong field competing for a record prize fund of £3.5m. This is set to include Ernie Els of South Africa, Angel Cabrera of Argentina and ninth-ranked Vijay Singh of Fiji. Faldo has been successful in competition to have lifted the PGA trophy four times a record for this tournament, on his heels is, Montgomerie, Langer and Alliss who are all triple champions.
