Golf News | Faldo Pulls Out of the 2008 Open

The European Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo has announced that he will not be competing in this year's Open at Royal Birkdale. This will be the first time that he has not been at the event since 1975, this was when Faldo was still an amateur and failed to qualify.

Faldo at 50 is a three-times former champion of the tournament and has not said that this is the end of his Open cup experience, not ruling out appearing again. He has said that all is efforts need to be concentrated on the Ryder Cup. Last year Faldo was unfortunate in missing the cut at Carnoustie and has not taken part in a tournament since last November’s Hong Kong Open.

Faldo's history at the Open came at Birkdale. He debuted 32 years ago, having a string of Scottish titles behind him over the years 1987, 1990 and 1992.
