Damien McGrane speaks about fulfilling a childhood
dream by winning his first European Tour title. The 37-year-old
Irishman took the title at the Volvo China Open with an impressive
nine-stroke margin over his competitors.
The conditions in Beijing were not ideal and yet the
wet and windy conditions, had little effect on Mcgrane’s game and
attitude. Those who witnessed hi emphatic performance have commented
that he thrived to go onto card a one-over-par 73 in the final round.
McGrane remained focused and unshaken by the weather as his struggling
competitors incurred bogey after bogey as they desperately clambered to
close in on his lead.
McGrane’s turning point came on the par-five
ninth, on his third shot he hit a seven iron just short of the green.
Which he then went on to convert into a birdie by to chipping on and
nicely rolling the golf ball towards the hole. That gave McGrane a
four-stroke lead at the turn and he never looked back, carding a birdie
on the 11th and a bogey on the last.
English competitor Simon Griffiths was also well
adapted to the conditions seen on the field and climbed to an
impressive shared second place. He held this spot alongside Wilson and
Michael Lorenzo-Vera. Mark Brown however shot a triple bogey on the
18th losing him all hope of a second place finisher, his complete game
delivering his a respectable third place.
