Last Grasp Victory In Portugal
All teams closed on 420 so all non-scores were taken
into account with Ben Parker’s 75 against that of Niall
Kearney’s 77 for Ireland’s team – allowing victory
for England.
Team England had started in third place on the last
day, having trailed Ireland (leaders) by five strokes, and the Swedish
team by one. With Evans having returned a 68 and 69 from Wood, England
had the best final day aggregate.
Scoring two eagles in his 68 at the 10th and 16th – whilst Wood
eagled his tenth.
Leaving it now in Ireland’s court, with Lowry taking 68 and 74
from Ward, the team were tied with England. In his final game, Lowry
had a 14’ eagle putt on the 18th (par 5) to award Ireland with
the title – his ball however missed on the low side.
Earlier that day, Parker miss judged a tap-in putt on his 18th that
could have provided dear to him – if Kearney had not had such a
poor day.
The Danish team finished on 422 in third place thanks to a record by
Grud on 66. With France in fourth place on 423 and Sweden taking fifth
place.
The individual prize was awarded to Lowry for his 205
– just one point ahead of European Amateur champion, Hebert from
France with bronze going to Wood for his 207.
