Walter Driver Jr, the president of the U.S. Golf Association soon to give way to Jim Vernon, has spoken about his achievements and his refusing to let the USGA revert to its earlier days. The revolutionary moves made in his two years were not only a reflection of his personality but now an established part of the organization’s character.

Driver made strives to modernise the tradition-bound organisation. It is widely observed that it tolerates little change, and far from seeks it. Driver made radical changed the USGA’s management team. Two veterans were removed from their positions, though this was considered an unpopular move, and he also recruited savvy business leaders into strategic standings. He also reviewed the employment benefits that had become cherished perks for long term employees. It was under Driver also that the USGA developed into corporate sponsorships; large scale commercial venture has been avoided by the governing body for more than a century.

During his career and with no doubt in its wake, Driver’s agenda and its implementation, created mistrust, ranging to hostility, among many USGA employees. Driver acknowledges the moves on his part that have been considered extreme, un-necessary and unfair. Though in the aftermath of these accusations, Driver still insists the USGA has benefitted from reform and therefore offers no apologies to or from the Executive Committee.
