Golf Clubs - A brief history of golf clubs, part 2
Golf Clubs - A brief history of golf clubs, part 2
Golf Clubs - A brief history of golf clubs, part 2
The next major evolution in
golf clubs
was to be witnessed around 1935, when supply was at an all time high with clubs available in both modern and traditional materials. To avoid players from using an excessive number of
clubs
, a rule was introduced in 1939 that dictated the maximum number of golf clubs to be carried and used in a game; this rule was intended to endorse an individual’s skill.
The completion of the Second World War saw the development of
golf clubs
become heavily influenced by research carried out on composite and synthetic materials. The first ‘cast-made’ clubs appeared in the early sixties offering golfers an opportunity to purchase inexpensive clubs – manufactured to high specifications and standards. Pro golfers continued to use the more traditional ‘forged’ club as it was thought to offer an increased feel and control over modern ‘casted’ golf clubs.
Graphite Shafted Golf Clubs Appear
Graphite shafted
golf clubs
made their appearance in 1972 and offered exceptional rigidity, lightness and incomparable strength compared to steel shafted clubs. This type of shaft is commonly mixed with other materials in today’s golf clubs to further improve performance. It is typical for amateur golfers to continue to use steel shafted clubs due to their affordability and selection.
The first manufacturer of
golf clubs
to produce metal woods was Taylor-Made. Callaway has the record for producing the most successful brand of club in golfing history, the over-sized Big Bertha – introduced in 1991. In today’s world of
golf clubs
there is enormous selection of woods on sale – each attempting to outdo the other with new materials such as Titanium finding its way into most square and triangular in addition to over-sized driver heads.
