If you’d like to learn more about the major golf
tournaments, then read on.
The Masters
The Masters Tournament, commonly referred to as The Masters or The
US Masters (outside the United States), is one of four major
championships in men's professional golf and the first to occur every
year. The final round of the Masters each year is scheduled the second
Sunday in April. Unlike the other major championships, the Masters is
held every year at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a
private golf club in Augusta, Georgia, USA. The Masters was started by
Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones, who designed Augusta National with
legendary course architect Alister MacKenzie.
The U.S Open
The United States Open Championship is the annual men's open golf
tournament of the United States of America and it is staged by the
United States Golf Association each June, scheduled such that the final
round is always played on the 3rd Sunday of that month. The U.S. Open
is staged at a variety of courses, and they are usually set up in such
a way that low scoring is very difficult and there is a premium on
accurate driving. Normally, an Open course is longer than normal and
will have a high cut of rough (termed "Open rough" by the American
press and fans), hilly greens and pinched fairways.
The Open
The Open Championship - colloquially known as the British Open
outside the United Kingdom - is the oldest of the four major
championships in men's golf. The event is hosted annually by one of
several prestigious golf clubs in the United Kingdom and is
administered by The R&A regardless of its location. It is always
played on a links course. The Open is played on the weekend of the
third Friday in July, and is the third major to take place each year
following The Masters and the U.S. Open and before the PGA Championship.
The PGA Championship
The PGA Championship (referred to as the US PGA Championship outside
of North America) is an annual golf tournament conducted by the
Professional Golfers Association of America as part of the PGA TOUR.
The PGA Championship is the golf season's final major, played in
August. In line with the other majors, winning the PGA gives a golfer
several privileges which make his career much more secure, if he is not
already one of the elite of the sport. The Championship has been held
at a large number of venues, some of the early ones now quite obscure,
but nowadays it is usually staged by one of a small group of celebrated
courses, each of which has also hosted several other leading events.
