Golf clubs – Champions’ Memorable Moments
Golf Clubs – Champions’ Memorable Moments
Check out some memorable moments from over 80 years of
swinging golf clubs at the PGA Championship.
- In 1921, Walter Hagen first swung his golf clubs into prominence
when he claimed the first of his five PGA Championships.
- 1942, As World War Two raged, US Army Corporal Jim Turnesa and US
Navy recruit Sam Snead squared up their golf clubs for the 25th PGA
Championship. The Navy boy won.
- 1957, Lionel Herbert was the last match play PGA Champion –
he defeated Dow Finsterwald at Miami Valley Golf Club in Ohio.
- 1963, Jack Nicklaus, known as The Golden Bear, at the age of 23
swung his golf clubs on to win his first PGA Championship. He joined
the ranks of Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Gene Sarazen for winning the
US Open, the PGA and the Masters Championships.
- 1972, Gary Player’s spectacular recovery shot was hailed a
miracle. He came from nowhere and couldn’t even see the flagstick
– but he lined up the shot by standing on a chair. As his golf
clubs swung he pocketed his second Championship after the ball rolled
four feet from the hole.
- 1984, Lee Trevino realised that his golf clubs didn’t know
his age – 44, old for a pro – and stepped up to his game to
win his second PGA Championship.
- 2004, Vijay Singh also claimed his second PGA Championship
defeating Chris DiMarco.
Tiger’s Roar
In 2006, Tiger Woods established himself as a legendary player when
he swung his golf clubs to success once more winning the 88th PGA
Championship. He blew away the competition with a five-shot victory and
the 12th major career championship title.
“It was a special day out there," Woods told the press. “I
just had one of those magical days on the greens today. I just felt
like if I got the ball anywhere on the green, I could make it. It's not
too often you get days like that, and I happened to have it on the
final round of a major championship.”
It means Tiger Woods is just six major championship titles short of
the legendary Jack Nicklaus who achieved 18 titles in the 20 years of
swinging his golf clubs.
“It's still a long way away," said Woods, referring to
Nicklaus. "It's not something I could get next year. You know, as I
said, it took Jack over 20 years to get to his. It's going to take a
career and I've just got to keep plugging along and keep trying to win
these things.”
