Golf Clubs – The Movies of Early Hollywood

Golf Clubs The Movies of Early Hollywood

The 1950s could be seen as the golden age - when the movies embraced golf and many of Hollywood 's stars hung out in the golf clubs.

Follow the Sun, (1951) Glenn Ford and Anne Baxter.

The Movies love a good biopic. This one stars Glenn Ford as golf champion Ben Hogan who had masterful control over his golf clubs with a repetitive swing that was accurate beyond belief. Hogan himself took his golf clubs onto the movie's set and the film used his golf shots which shows how good a player he was. Anne Baxter played his supportive wife Valerie, who sticks with him when his golfing career is threatened by an automobile accident. The movie's power lies in the fact that golfing legends swing their golf clubs on screen Sam Snead, Jimmy Demaret and Dr Cary Middlecoff all co-star.

Pat and Mike (1952) Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.

One of the typical storylines of the movies in Hollywood is man meets girl, girl falls in love. Pat and Mike was unique for its day as the character clutching the golf clubs is a woman Katharine Hepburn plays an athlete with potential that is until her dominating fiancé is around. One look at him and her nerve in her golf clubs goes but Spencer Tracy, who also stars in the movie, turns up as a sports coach and turns her into a golfing champion. Pat turns her back on marriage and finds a new love story not only with the movie's star Spencer Tracy, but with her golf clubs.

The Caddy (1953) Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

The Caddy is one of the movies that made Dean Martin's career namely because as well as featuring the golf clubs, it was a showcase for Martin singing That's Amore' probably the song most identified with the crooner.

The song was written by Harry Warren-Jack Brooks, and although Jerry Lewis had many moments clowning around with his golf clubs, That's Amore' meant this was one of the movies that would be Dean Martin's triumph. Despite the fact many critics felt it was Jerry Lewis's comic talents that kept the duo's success alive in their movies.

The film was also a personal pleasure for Dean Martin who as well as his character in the movie, was a member of golf clubs in real life. He was considered to be passionate about golf and was one of the best players around, alongside Bing Crosby.

Apparently, even when he wasn't in a scene for the movie, he'd be on the links with his golf clubs anyway.
