Golf Clubs – The Movies – James Bond and Golf
Golf Clubs The Movies James Bond and Golf
In the movies featuring 007, Bond has been known to swing a few golf clubs in his time although perhaps a little more violently than most.
The movies
James Bond is undoubtedly the most iconic figure in the movies, and his creator Ian Fleming loved to hang around golf clubs. This passion for the sport was injected into two Bond movies with memorable scenes set at one of the most famous golf clubs Stoke Park Club in England .
The 1964 Bond movie, Goldfinger, was the seventh Bond novel published in 1959. The famous golf scene was at the fictional Royal St Mark's in Kent (really it was shot at Stoke Park Golf Club) and it is perhaps the most famous golf scene in the Bond movies.
Cheating golf clubs
After catching the villain Goldfinger cheating during a game of golf, Bond, played by Sean Connery, switches golf balls during the match. But Goldfinger catches on that 007 is investigating his affairs and dispatches his deadly sidekick the Korean caddie, Oddjob, to intimidate Bond.
What would the golf club's secretary say?
One of the most memorable villains in the Bond movies, Oddjob throws his steel-rimmed bowler hat and cuts the head off a statue in the golf club. In the movie, Bond is impressed but wonders what the golf club's secretary would say. Goldfinger isn't worried he owns the golf club.
Stoke Park Golf Club and the movies
Stoke Park Golf Club is a favourite setting for the movies. As well as the infamous Goldfinger scene, where golf clubs are used as weapons for our spy, many other movies have used the club as a backdrop.
Tomorrow Never Dies
In 1997, Pierce Brosnan took over the tuxedo in the Bond movies and returned once more to the Stoke Park Golf Club. The Ballroom at the club was turned into a hotel room for Bond.
Bridget Jones's Diary
Another movie adaptation from a successful book, Bridget Jones's Diary, was shot at Stoke Park Club. Hugh Grant takes Renee Zellwegger to the famous golf club for a luxury romantic break. The Golf Club features in one of the most famous scenes of the Bridget Jones's movies when Hugh Grant falls into the boating lake.
Other films featured at the Stoke Park Golf Club:
- Layer Cake with Daniel Craig and Sienna Miller. As a twist of fate, Daniel Craig is now the new James Bond in the movie, Casino Royale.
- Bride and Prejudice.
- The President's Daughter
The Golf club has also been a backdrop for numerous TV programmes and photo shoots. The Golf Club's 27-hole 1908 championship golf course is one of the top 100 in the world.
