A fundamental part of golf and an excellent piece of golf advice is the ‘play as it lies’ rule. This simply means that you play from where the ball lands, in no way are you allowed to move or touch the golf ball. It is accepted that regardless of how and where the ball rests, it is good golf advice the player must strike the ball from that position.

There are rare exceptions to this rule which a detailed in any good golf club hand book or detailed guide to golf. Though in the interest of adhering to the widely held rules, do not move or touch the golf ball unless you are in no doubt that you are allowed to and can look to other players for assurance of your decisions legality.
This being said it is good to not that a common exception that you would do well to remember is when placing the ball on the green. You are allowed to pick up your golf ball to clean it when you are placing it on the putting green. This is allowed so long as no advantage is gained from the balls having left the course surface, to assure this place a ballmarker behind the ball before picking it. This way you can be confident that when you place the ball back to take your shot, that the ball has not moved far from its landing position - again, this might appear to be an obvious instruction but it is still considered to be a valuable piece of golf advice.
