Padraig Harrington
wins Open Championship
24/07/2007
Padraig Harrington has clinched his first major by
defeating Sergio Garcia after a tense final day and playoff.
Sergio Garcia held the lead for three out of the four
days, but a brilliant performance saw Padraig move up the leaderboard
and into first place. However, on the 18th hole, Padraig twice drowned
his ball in the perilous Barry Burn, reminding all watching of the
infamous downfall of Jean Van de Velde on that same hole. This gave
Sergio Garcia a putt for the championship, which he rolled agonisingly
close, but not close enough to win the Spaniard his first major.
The pair then entered into a tense four hole playoff,
playing the 1st, 16th, 17th and 18th. Harrington took a two shot lead
after the first hole, which in the end proved to be enough to stave off
a brave charge from Sergio (which included hitting the pin on the Par 3
16th).
The Irishman used his Wilson golf clubs to tame
Carnoustie, which included:
- Wilson Staff Dd6+ Driver
- Wilson Staff Pf6 Fairway Woods
- Wilson Staff Dh6 Hybrid
- Wilson Staff Pi5 Irons
- Wilson Staff Tw7 Wedges
- Odyssey White Hot 2-Ball Blade Putter
The golf club set was completed with Titleist Pro V1
Balls. |
