Golf clubs – Champions Overcome Grief

Golf Clubs – Champions Overcome Grief

Despite the recent loss of Tiger Woods’s father, he still won the 2006 Open Championships keeping cool control of his golf clubs.

Grief

This year’s Open Championship was remarkable for the fact that two of the main players were coming to terms with grief, and yet both showed remarkable control of their golf clubs.

Tiger Woods has had to cope with the recent loss of his father. The defending champion still finished on 18 under, two shots ahead of Chris DiMarco, proving he doesn’t let his emotions control his golf clubs.

Champion’s loss

But as soon as the defending champion retained his title and put his golf clubs down, the man who had displayed such cool determination broke into tears. He hugged his caddie, his wife and his coach.

Woods later told the media why despite the remarkable win, he was saddened his father couldn’t be there to celebrate with him.
“After the putt, all these emotions just poured out of me. They have been locked in there,” he said. “I just miss my dad so much. I wish he could have been here to witness this.”

DiMarco Kept Control

Chris DiMarco tried to take the championship from Woods, and gave a dogged display with his golf clubs. It was even more impressive considering, like Woods, DiMarco had also lost a parent – his mother.

“It was amazing to be able to feel her looking down on me,” DiMarco told the press. “I felt my mom was there the whole week,” he said. “I love her, I miss her and I know I'll never see her again, but I know if I close my eyes I see her.”

Woods and DiMarco had swapped kind words during the tournament.

“Tiger just has an uncanny ability to, when somebody gets close to him, just turn it up another level,” DiMarco said of the game.

The play of both men proves that to be champions in the sport takes incredible control – physically and mentally – over their golf clubs.

Champion of the golf world

Woods is now considered to be the best player in the world after winning 11 out of 11 majors. The Californian is the 19th of all the champions in Open history to win three Claret Jugs, proving there is no match for his golf clubs.

DiMarco’s skilful use of his golf clubs also ranked him high for claiming a place in the American team for this year’s championship tournament – the Ryder Cup.
