Golf Balls – Bizarre Stories
Golf Balls – Bizarre Stories
The world of golf is full of bizarre stories from a fox stealing golf balls to bizarre hole-in-ones.
A hole-in-one - twice?
The chances of two people both hitting a hole-in-one on the same hole is 17 million to one, but that’s what happened on Australia’s Sunshine Coast. Two men in their seventies were playing at the Horton Golf Club when they hit their golf balls into the same hole - one after the other.
Keith Barnes hit his golf ball in a hole-in-one, then his playing partner Michael Cowdell followed suit.
“I saw it hit the green and run and they jumped up and down and said, ‘it’s in the hole’, and then Michael lined up and the same damn thing happened so you can imagine the cheering and jumping the second time was about twice as high,” Keith told the press.
Hatching a golf ball
In Germany, a pair of storks tried to hatch golf balls they had picked up from a golf course. They stole so many golf balls for their nest that it overflowed. Stork experts predicted that the birds had lost their original nest to a rival pair of Storks and their parental instincts urged them to try and hatch the golf balls. They finally became parents when they were given an abandoned egg to tend.
Foxy business
A sly fox lived up to the animal’s reputation when it stole two golf balls from a golf course in Sweden during the middle of a tournament. It left golf officials bemused about how to continue the game when the fox took the golf balls to a nearby forest. The fox apparently thought the golf balls were eggs to eat – clearly misunderstanding which kind of birdies were at play.
Golf ball glasses
With all these animals and birds pilfering golf balls, it’s a wonder any waylaid golf balls are ever retrieved. But inventors have come up with a pair of golf ball finding glasses that block out 90% of long wavelength light – dark colours such as greens and browns – and lets shorter wavelength light – colours such as white and yellow – pass through impeded. This means that golf balls will be instantly visible in the undergrowth.
The glasses were developed by two nuclear engineers in Canada who were tired of wasting time searching for their golf balls in the rough.
