A Beginner's Guide To Golf Balls
A Beginner’s Guide To Golf Balls
The development of golf balls in the past twenty five years represents one of greatest achievements in the golfing world.
Not only can a modern golf ball travel further, it can roll for longer, maintain its shape and fly straighter. Precision engineering has allowed manufacturers such as Wilson, Prosimmon and Nike to customise factors such as trajectory to spin rates. This also allows manufacturers such as Nike to personalise golf equipment to the unique specifications of its high profile consultants like Tiger Woods.
In the past, all players of the game used a soft, easy-cutting balata-covered ball – from beginner to professional.
Nowadays, with such a wide selection of golf balls available – manufacturers have narrowed it down to two classes of balls: spin and distance.
There are two main classes of balls: spin and distance.
Spin
Three-piece construction, with a central core surrounded by rubber windings, occasionally covered with a soft material named ‘balata’. Designed to spin more aggressively – allowing the golf ball to hold the green.
Distance
Typically manufactured in harder material, with highly durable covers and solid cores. Internally, a golf ball designed for distance will contain a firm, synthetic material. Both materials allow the ball to travel further, and be more durable – distance balls will provide less spin. A lesser degree of spin will mean less control and overall stopping ability in certain circumstances.
