Batting is pivotal to any game of cricket and its important if you're a batsman to spend a large amount of your training on this skill alone. Batting has evolved dramatically over the past twenty years mainly due to the vast changes in the scoring rates which a batsmen will acquire through his runs. With the improvement in equipment and the actual cricket pitch, batmen have been encouraged to take more risks than they used to and even a bad shot can often produce more runs than it should.

The introduction of one-day cricket has played a large part in the increased scoring of batsmen. But another important factor to consider aside from the equipment is a batsmen's psychological abilities. Psychology plays a huge part in the game of cricket and this technique requires a certain level of training to adopt and use well, without compromising on traditional techniques.

Two of the basic skills which require a significant amount of training are your grip and your stance as a batsman. Although these skills might vary slightly between batsmen, the general techniques are universal and can be adopted into the training of cricket players and their equipment.

Grip - The term "grip" is adopted to describe how a batsman holds his batting equipment with his hands. It's actually one of the most important factors in being a good batsman, as a correct, and more importantly, a comfortable viable grip can help a batsman exploit a wide range of shots, with full flair. There are two types of grips, a 'V' shaped grip and an 'O' shaped grip and both types of grip can be used in training to perfect your grip ready for a match.

Stance � It's important to consider your cricket stance when training as a lot of batsmen develop injuries from standing incorrectly on the pitch. When training in stance, start by analysing your leg position. Your feet should be comfortably apart and the weight should be evenly distributed on either foot, with no pressure on your heels or toes. Your knees should be slightly bent. Next, analyse your back position, making sure that your front shoulder is pointing straight down towards the pitch in line with the stumps that are opposite. Your head should be still and not tilted at all and your eyes should be focused straight ahead of you.
Your top hand should be resting on your front thigh, while the bat should be grounded around the toes of your back foot
