As the game of cricket has developed over the past twenty years, so has the role of the fielder. Unlike in the past when fielding was only seen as something to pass the time when you weren't batting or bowling, it is now seen as a skill. With the introduction of one day cricket matches, fielding has become a technique in its own right and good fieldsmen will always excel over those who are less equipped to play the game.

The key technique in cricket fielding is to always head towards the ball when it has been hit rather than standing waiting for the ball to come to you. You should start walking towards the ball as the bowler is running and then when the bowler finally releases the ball, adopt the �springing� technique. This is a technique which is adopted by Chris Harris and many other international cricket players. The springing technique occurs when a fielder stops and springs with their knees, allowing them to transfer their weight to the left or right, depending where the ball is heading. If you practice this technique enough, you should become well equipped to handle any catch.

Another good cricket technique used in fielding is called the �long barrier�. This is a technique where a cricketer uses his body as a barrier to shield the ball, giving other fieldsman a better chance to stop the ball.

When returning the ball to the wicket keeper, it's important to adopt the best throw you can. This technique is achieved by transferring your weight from the back to the front foot as you throw the cricket ball. Use your other arm to keep your balance and to help you aim the cricket ball towards the correct target. Remember that accuracy is far more important than power, particularly if you're fielding in the inner circle.

There are many techniques to catching a cricket ball and it's important to be fully equipped with as many different types of catching as possible. Listed below are 2 of the most common techniques:

Reverse Cup - For a high catch, use the "reverse cup" technique. This is an attempt to catch at eye-level whilst keeping your hand high. Watch the ball the whole time until it hits your hands.

Orthodox Cup � This technique occurs when you're taking a catch at body level.

The aim is to catch at the base of your fingers with both these techniques. This allows the ball to "give" and not pop out upon impact.
