Cricket Equipment – Fielding Techniques In Cricket
Cricket Equipment Fielding Techniques In Cricket
See below for a comprehensive guide on the sliding stop technique.
The sliding stop technique is a technique used when fielding in cricket. The technique became popular through its exposure on television and has become popular amongst schools and cricket clubs. However, the danger with the sliding stop technique is that if it's performed incorrectly, you can seriously injure yourself.
Although you can find instructions on how to perform the sliding stop technique in manuals, the problem is that it is not being instructed by cricket clubs or schools, making it quite a dangerous technique to perform. Many people agree that because of this, the technique should be discouraged in these institutions unless it is taught properly by trained cricket instructors.
Since the one day game of cricket was broadcast, the game of cricket has had to become adapted in order to fit a game into such a short space of time. This has resulted in many modifications of cricket techniques, in particular, fielding techniques. Fielding has become more athletic and is now becoming as exciting to watch as bowling or batting.
The sliding technique is one element of fielding which falls into this category. The technique is performed when a fielder intercepts the cricket ball by sliding at speed on his hip and knee. He will then stand and throw the ball as quickly and smoothly as possible. The reason that this technique is becoming so popular is that the look of it is very appealing. It makes a cricket player appear more athletic and skilled, and because the technique is being performed by international players, junior players are seeing it and wanting to copy it.
Although there are few reports of injury using the sliding stop technique, it is anticipated that such reports will grow in future years as more young, prospective cricket players become aware of the technique. It is thought that in many cases, the actual spectacle of this technique might outweigh its actual value when performed on the cricket pitch and is it a technique that is discouraged unless you know the correct method.
Correct technique for performing the sliding stop
The ECB recommend that the sliding stop technique be coached at cricket training levels two and three. For right handed throwers, the fielder chases the ball with it slightly to his left hand side. When in range, he slides feet first with the right leg extended and the left leg flexed at the knee to 90° under the right leg forming a figure of 4. The fielder slides on his left buttock and hip area, and the left hand is used to steady and balance. As the ball is picked up in the right hand, the right foot engages the ground, and the momentum of the slide combined with a push from the left hand brings the fielder upright and then into a position to throw the ball. For left handed throwers the right/left instructions are reversed.
