Cricket Equipment – Records – The Record Remains With Boon
Cricket Equipment Records The Record Remains With Boon
Cricket has set many records in its time, but David Boon set a different record which didn't involve his equipment!
If you are interested in cricket records, you might be interested to know that famous Australian cricket player, David Boon, holds a very unusual record relating to cricket. Boon actually holds the Ashes record for the most cans of lager consumed between Sydney and London , on board the actual flight!
With his cricket equipment safely bestowed on board the flight, Boon was more than happy to take part in breaking this record and managed to wade through 52 cans of lager during the flight. No cricket player has managed to top this unusual record, with Rod Marsh and Doug Walters being the only cricket players to come close, at 46 and 44 cans respectively.
Throughout his cricket career and aside from his cricket equipment, David Boon, nicknamed Boony' became a cult figure for his record drinking exploits and singing of team songs. The stocky-built moustached batsman became famous for vomiting on the Adelaide Oval turf in a WSC game in 1988 before a live nationwide TV audience of millions. Boony miraculously went on to make a 122 runs and won Man Of The Match!
David Clarence Boon was born on 29 th December 1960 in Launceston , Tasmania . He became an international Australian cricket player during the 1980s and 1990s, and came to fame for being a stocky right-hand batsman. When he wasn't brandishing his cricket equipment, or trying to break drinking records, Boony fielded at short leg.
Boony made his Test debut against the West Indies in Brisbane in 1984 and went on to become score record numbers of runs for Australia . Having retired from his cricket equipment, Boony is now a member of the Cricket Australia selection panel that selects the Australian Cricket Team for international matches.
David Boon's most recent challenge to precede his record drinking attempt, was when he was asked to become the face of Victoria Bitter (VB) for its 2005/06 summer advertising campaign. VB is a well known brand of beer made in Australia . Boony seemed the perfect choice as he had recently hung up his cricket equipment and was now known worldwide for his record breaking drinking!
The promotion was named Boonanza' and part of it was the sale of a talking David Boon figurine with purchases of beer, which would make comments when prompted by Channel Nine commentary. Boony played himself in the television advertisements. This was a controversial choice, as Boon achieved much fame and notoriety for his legendary batting equipment, not just his drinking exploits.
