Cricket Equipment – Famous Players – Makhaya Ntini

Makhaya Ntini is has become a famous player due to his incredible skills on the cricket pitch. He is also revolutionary for being the first black man to have brought his cricket equipment and played with it in the South African cricket team.

The famous player, Ntini, was first spotted by Border Cricket development officer, Raymond Booi in his home village based in Mdingi, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Booi’s role was to introduce young men and boys to the game of cricket. He would go round villages with cricket equipment and introduce people to the game, in the hope that he would find someone with enough raw talent to train professionally.

One day, Ntini was spotted by Booi and handed some cricket equipment. Ntini was then asked to bowl with a cricket ball. Ntini’s bowl was so fast that Booi knew he’s found a famous player in the making.

Ntini was immediately sent to attend Dale College, a school which was known for its sporting achievements. Even thought the famous cricket player in the making couldn’t speak a word of English when he arrived, he made great progress during his years at the school.

Ntini took his cricket equipment out for the first time and made his debut against England who were touring South-Africa in 1995. The match was successful and Ntini made his mark as a future famous world class player.

Because Ntini was one of the first black cricketers to be noticed by South Africa when the country became democratic in 1994, Ntini became very popular with the national cricket selectors and he was soon selected for the South African team, making his debut against New Zealand at the WACA in Perth, Australia. Ntini’s cricket equipment did not let him down and he performed superbly, sending down 10 overs and conceding only 31 runs, while claiming the wickets of Black Cap captain Stephen Fleming and wicketkeeper Adam Parore.

Ntini’s Ultimate Career Highlight
The highlight of Ntini’s cricketing career came during the second Test match at Lords Cricket ground in England. After a drawn first Test, South Africa took the initiative on the opening day of the second Test, skittling England for just 173 on a good batting pitch. Ntini led the way with 5 for 75. With his golden cricket equipment in hand, Ntini managed to finish the series with 23 wickets, 10 more than any English bowler managed and six more than the next best South African famous player, Shaun Pollock.
