First World War

For soldiers fighting in the trenches in the First World War, sport was another way of relieving the tension. Football, as might be expected, was very popular with both formal and impromptu games taking place. Other sports such as boxing and cricket were also played. Some soldiers remember making their own sports and cricket equipment out of objects close to hand. Tennis could be played with entrenching tools, cricket bats could be made out of old tins and pieces of wood. For units with access to horses, there were divisional horse shows, point to points and competitions for the best turned-out horse or team of horses.  

Somebody else’s problem

In Douglas Adams’ novel ‘Life, the Universe and Everything’, the universe is threatened by the killer krikkit robots.  Having chosen to spend his time to the fullest being stranded on pre-historic Earth by going insane, the unfortunate Arthur Dent is sidetracked by the sudden reappearance of Ford Prefect. Prefect pulls him through an eddy in the space-time continuum (cleverly disguised as a sofa) and into Lord's Cricket Ground a day before the Vogons are to destroy the Earth. Unfortunately, the pitch is about to be the scene of a shocking act of intergalactic terrorism. A ship lands and a squad of robots steals The Ashes while wreaking havoc in what seems to be an obscene parody of cricket.  Somehow the crowd watching the game is too busy watching the cricket equipment to notice, giving rise too the notion of an SEP (somebody else’s problem)

It’s a record

The longest cricket match was between South Africa and England in Durban, South Africa and began on March 03, 1939 and continued till March 14, 1939, although they did not play on the 5th, 11th or 12th. Unfortunately England had to pack up their cricket equipment and catch a boat home on the 15th so after play on the 14th the match was called a draw and both teams went home.  From June 24 to June 25, 2006 the Cheriton Fitzpaine Cricket Club of Devon, England managed to cricket around for a chirpy 27 hours 34 minutes. From June 10 to June 11, 2006 the Citipointe Church of Brisbane, Australia played cricket in the rain to raise for tsunami victims, lasting a soggy 34 hours.

Cricket equipment on an empty stomach

When Raj Miah receives a telephone order at his Indian restaurant in the South of England, he does not usually expect the delivery to involve an 18,000-mile round trip. But during the December 06 Ashes, Mr Miah set out for Perth, Australia, with a meal for ten people, following a special request from a regular at his restaurant. When the regular and nine friends were unable to find a curry to match what they are used to, they decided to take drastic action, contacting Mr Miah and begging him to fly them over a meal.  Including the food and Mr Miah's air fare, the trip will cost the cricket fans around £1,500!  Could have bought a lot of new cricket equipment for the price of a curry!
