Cricket Equipment – Techniques – How To Spin Your Ball
Cricket Equipment Techniques How To Spin Your Ball
If you want to master your cricket equipment to perform the techniques of spin bowling, read on.
Spin bowling has become more popular in recent years due to the high-profile players which have become equipped with the technique. Famous cricket player, Shane Warne, who holds the record for the highest amount of test wickets in his career, Anil Kumble and Muttiah Muralitharan, are all equipped to use this particular cricket technique.
The main aim of the spin bowling technique is to bowl the cricket ball so that it rotates and will deviate off the pitch when it lands, making the batsman less equipped to hit the ball. The speed of this particular cricket bowling technique is not essential and usually ranges between 70-90 km per hour. Spin bowlers can be classified into two broad groups, finger spinners and wrist spinners:
Finger spinners - are known as either 'off-spin', turning into the right-handed batsman, in the hands of a right-handed bowler, or 'slow left-arm', turning across and away from the right-hander. Finger spin is the easier of the two techniques to master with your cricket equipment.
Wrist Spinners This is often argued as being a more effective cricket technique to achieve with your cricket equipment. A bowler generally turns the ball across and away from the right-handed batsman, whilst the left-handed version ('chinaman', turning the ball into the right-hander) is rarely seen at International level.
In order to use the spin bowl technique, the conditions of the cricket pitch must be suitable. If a wicket is dry and breaking up, it will be perfectly equipped for the spin bowl technique. This is because there are more spots where the ball can grip the surface. Skilled spin bowlers are equipped in making the batsman think that the cricket balls are going to be well pitched, when actually they cause the ball to dip late causing the batsman to be stumped or miss the ball altogether which could result in a catch. Most players therefore consider a spin bowler to be a more difficult bowler to play against.
If you're just learning how to spin bowl then a tip is to try to bowl the cricket ball at a speed where the ball will achieve the maximum amount of spins. The variations of spin can be learnt, practised and achieved later down the scale.
Spin bowlers are usually given the task of bowling with an old, worn cricket ball. A new cricket ball better suits the techniques of fast bowling than spin bowling, while a worn one grips the pitch better and achieves greater spin.
