Justin Rose has confirmed that he will not be playing at next month’s Johnnie Walker Championship, which is the final qualifying event for Ryder Cup points, even though Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie has said he expects everyone still in contention for his three wild card places in the Ryder Cup team to be there.
“To be there would make a whole lot of sense to a whole lot of people. I will have around eight candidates for three spots.” Montgomerie said earlier this month."I shouldn't have to ask those eight to play at Gleneagles. They will be there."
Rose however has said that although the Ryder Cup is important to him, his main focus at the moment is the FedEx Cup Standings, which he is currently third in.
It is still possible that Rose could be among the nine who qualify automatically, but even a victory in Sunday at the Irish Open will leave him with work to do to get into the final nine.
He will also be playing in next week’s World Golf Championship, and the following weeks USPGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
Rose currently lies seventh in the World points list and only the first four on this list are guaranteed a place on the Ryder Cup Team.
